Process Educational Payments to Students

Before You Begin

University students may receive payment from the University for scholarships, grants, fellowships, traineeships, stipends, allowances, and assistantships. These types of payments are not processed by University Payables (UPAY).

The type and purpose of a payment determines which OBFS unit processes it and whether it must be reported to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) as taxable income or financial aid.

Begin

To process educational payments to students:

  1. Consult Payments to University of Illinois Students or the flow chart Student Payment Treatment Determination: Payroll, Scholarships, Grants, and Reimbursements to determine whether what you propose is a scholarship, grant, fellowship, traineeship, stipend, allowance, or assistantship.
  2. Process the payment based on the information on these pages.
