20.1.1 Request University Identification Numbers (UINs)

Policy Statement

The UIN was established in 1996 to limit the number of University of Illinois systems that use Social Security numbers to identify individuals' records. UINs are unique for the entire U of I System, and they are never changed or recycled. If you leave the system and return, your original UIN remains valid and will be used.

UINs are generated automatically when new and returning paid employees are onboarded in HR Front End. UINs are also created automatically for everyone who applies for admission. For other persons, units may need to request a UIN. If you are not sure whether someone already has a UIN, contact i-card Programs. Only i-card Programs' database contains all UINs.

Only active, regular employees of university or system units may request a UIN. Individuals cannot make that request for themselves.

Procedure

To request University Identification Numbers (UINs), read i-card Programs' UIN Creation and Lookups page, and choose the appropriate form for your needs. If you have questions, contact i-card Programs at icardhelp@uillinois.edu.

Forms Associated with this Procedure

Current UIN request options are provided on i-card Programs' UIN Creation and Lookups page.
