Section 13.3 - Chart of Accounts & Accounting Classifications

The University of Illinois chart of accounts and other classification methods for financial data are established and maintained to meet the financial reporting needs of the University and are the same for all campuses.

The Senior Associate Vice President for Business and Finance has delegated authority to create the chart of accounts and other necessary financial accounting classification methods, and to develop and install suitable business procedures to maintain them to the Executive Director of University Accounting and Financial Reporting.

These authorities apply to the chart of accounts and any other financial classification methods. The Executive Director of University Accounting and Financial Reporting is responsible for insuring that the coding systems meet the requirements of the Office of Business and Financial Services and facilitate the reporting requirements of campus units.

Operational Procedures

The Senior Associate Vice President for Business and Finance has delegated authority to the to the Executive Director of University Accounting and Financial Reporting to:

  • Authorize new Banner funds and programs as required;
  • Devise data classification methods when necessary to meet operational needs;
  • Develop and issue University-wide operating procedures for these purposes; and
  • Provide general supervision of these University-wide operations.

The Executive Director for University Accounting and Financial Reporting has further delegated this authority to the Director of University Accounting Services.

Organization Codes

The University Office of Planning and Budgeting is responsible for establishing organization codes for new academic and administrative units, including administrative rollup, college, school/sub-college, and department codes, which are maintained in the Codebook. The OBFS, University Accounting and Financial Reporting sets up all organization codes in the Banner financial system.
