Request University Identification Numbers (UINs)
Before You Begin
The UIN was established in 1996 to limit the number of University of Illinois systems that use Social Security numbers to identify individuals’ records. UINs never change or expire. If you leave the University and return, your original UIN remains valid and will be used.
UINs are automatically generated when employees are hired or students apply for admission. For those who are not employees or students, units may need to request a UIN. If you are not sure whether someone already has a UIN, contact i-card Programs. Only i-card Programs' database contains all UINs.
Only a University unit may request a UIN for a person. Individuals cannot make that request for themselves.
To request University Identification Numbers (UINs):
- Determine how many UINs you need. If you need:
- From 1 to 11, complete a Request for UIN form and submit to i-card Programs.
- 12 or more, contact i-card Programs at firstname.lastname@example.org.
