Verify Identity for In-Person Services
Before You Begin
University units should verify identity for in-person services to safeguard their customers and the University.
Begin
To verify identity for in-person services:
- Require a University of Illinois ID card or a government-issued photo ID such as a driver’s license or passport. Consult Accepted Proofs of Identity for a list of acceptable government IDs.
- Check that the ID has not expired.
- Be sure the photo matches the person in front of you.
- Carefully inspect IDs and other documents for signs of fraud or alteration.
- Require clear, legible IDs and documents. If a photo or document is too worn for you to compare with the person, ask for an alternate.
- If your unit provides services to people who have an i-card, visitor card, or other University-issued magnetic-stripe card, use an electronic card swipe to verify the cardholder’s eligibility for service. Contact the i-card Programs Help Desk for information about card swipes.
